Even as Showtime’s Twin Peaks left more maddeningly unresolved than the original series, fans have more or less accepted the unlikelihood of another season. That said, creator David Lynch won’t rule one out, even if “it took me four and a half years to write and record this [one].”

You’re warned of Twin Peaks spoilers from here on out, but The Return ending of Dale Cooper trapped in yet another alternate reality was pretty par for David Lynch, even if those who sat through all eighteen hours threw their coffee in frustration. Showtime itself also stated early on that they’d only intended the revival for one season; fitting after the initial production headaches and meager ratings returns.

One would presume David Lynch himself least interested in muddying his artful conclusion, but the director seemed surprisingly open to a fourth season when asked. As Entertainment Weekly relays, Lynch “appeared via Skype at a public event at the Kulturni Centar Beograda in Serbia in promotion of his ‘Small Stories’ photo exhibition” (which sounds about as David Lynch as it gets), stating:

It’s too early to say if there will be a fourth season of the series. If that were the case, we would have to wait a few more years because it took me four-and-a-half years to write and record this [season].

Lynch was otherwise unwilling to explain that Season 3 ending any further, likening viewer interpretation to the way we engage with literary works from authors who died a hundred years ago. Again; pretty David Lynch, as these things go.

There’s little clear consensus as to whether Twin Peaks really needs additional episodes, but might we find ourselves asking again in another four years? Wait, what year is it? And why is Sheryl Lee screaming at me?
