It all started when Congressman Justin Amash (R-MI 3rd District) responded to a tweet from the Washington Post asking if Taylor Swift should be allowed to "trademark her birth year."

Amash replied "no", Taylor Swift fans disagreed, then the Twitter wars began.

Taylor Swift fans were quick to creatively use Swift's lyrics to defend her.

After being told to "shake it off," Amash replied.

Amash explained that his "no" was sarcastic.

And more of an explanation.

Pop culture tweets are nothing new from Amash. In the last week, just a few of the references you'll find include Minority Report, Game of Thrones and Star Wars.
