Grand Rapids Dickinson Elementary gets Mobile Food Pantry

The Cintas Corporation in West Michigan is teaming up with Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank to sponsor a Mobile Food Pantry program at Dickinson Elementary School in Grand Rapids. Beginning today, April 25, this monthly program will provide fruits, vegetables, dairy products and baked goods to students and their families in the Dickinson neighborhood.

Salvation Army’s “Army of Readers” is April 19

Reading is so fundamental.  Who hasn't heard that phrase before.  But, it's true.  Without the ability to read, and there are more people who can't than you can imagine, the world is so closed off.

Starting early is key.  We want our children to have a love of reading so that the world literally opens up for them, and, reading to them is a monumental help.

Top High School Basketball Players in Mid-West Play Today in Grand Rapids

Some of the top, High School basketball players in the Mid-West will be in Grand Rapids today.  If you're a basketball fan at all, the Ottawa Hills High School gym will be the place to be because they're hosting the first annual Martin Luther King/Floyd Mayweather Classic today, Saturday, January 19. The games will feature some of the top talent and teams from Michigan and the Chicago area.

Grand Rapids Public Schools have announced they are considering closing ten schools.

The move would save $5 million per year.

GRPS is also discussing requiring students to wear uniforms.

It’s a Back-to-School Celebration Today at John Ball Park

Grand Rapids school leaders are expecting a large turnout of district families and friends today for its annual back-to-school celebration at John Ball Park.

School begins Sept. 4th, and Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal decided to hold one big bash this year rather than multiple parties in different quadrants of the city. Five were held last year.

Barry Manilow Helps GRPS get Music Instruments

Last week, I wrote a blog about Barry Manilow, and his donation of a piano to the Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Manilow had started a foundation, The Manilow Fund for Health and Hope, to, not only personally donate a piano,  to GRPS, but also to encourage local fans to donate used instruments.  They would then would be given to local schools.

A few days before his concert at the VanAndel Arena, Manilow teased people with the plea of donate a used instrument and get two free tickets to my concert.

School’s Out For Summer Grand Rapids

Will Smith did a song called Summertime, it was that song from the 90's that celebrated being out of school for the summer.  Then there was that old song Alice Cooper sang called, School's Out. And all of the nonsensical songs that kids just make up the words to that celebrate the end of another school year. I remember those days.  I would mark them off on my calendar until vacation was here!

Well, it's just about that time again mom, so Brace Yourself! One week away, and counting down the days until June 8th.  According to the Grand Rapids Public School System calendar that is the official end of the school year.
