Residential parking permits are pretty common in big cities, and now they're coming to Grand Rapids (at least in one neighborhood).

People who live in the Belknap Lookout region will have residential parking permits, which will cost them $30 for a year.

Residents living in the area voted on the idea and approved it by a 60 percent margin. These folks have become frustrated with being unable to find parking near their homes and apartments.

According to WZZM-13, City Manager Greg Sundstrom said on Tuesday morning, "This is not a money maker for the city. Not only are we not imposing this, but we are losing money."

Commissioner Walt Gutowksi also weighed in, saying, "This is happening because the neighborhoods have wanted it - it does not happen without the request of the neighborhood; that's very important."
