May 1 marked the start date of new speed limits on Michigan roads. Prepare to put the petal to the metal on US 131 North of Rockford.

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced last week the highways selected for higher speed limits as the result of new laws passed by the State legislature late last year.

Public Act 445 allowed the agency to up the limits on selected roads. The new higher limits when into effect on Monday, May 1.

Locally the higher limits effect US 131 north of Rockford from 10 Mile Road to the northern Wexford County line just past Cadillac. The speed limit on that stretch of freeway is now 75mph.

Also in West Michigan, US 31 north of Muskegon between Montague and Ludington will go to 75 mph, while newly opened M-231 between Lake Michigan Drive (M-45) and M-104 will increase to 65 mph.

Other increases that will impact your summer weekends up north include I-75 increasing to 75 mph from Bay City to the Mackinac Bridge and US-127 increasing to 75 mph from just north of M-57 to the I-75 merge south of Grayling.

M-37 increases to 65 mph from US-10 to M-115.
