"Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship", is coming to the Grand Rapids Public Museum this October. Tickets go on sale Thursday, August 7.

In celebration of this, Pirate Takeover Day will be held August 9th all around Downtown Grand Rapids.

Pirate Takeover Day is a giant scavenger hunt around Downtown GR. Five participating restaurants and breweries will each have one piece of a full pirate costume. Patrons will search for, collect and wear these costume pieces as they travel around downtown. There will be authentic pirate maps to guide participants through downtown to collect their booty.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. Participating local restaurants include Grand Rapids Brewing Company, HopCat, and the Pearl Street Grill.

The event will end at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Participants dressed in pirate garb are encouraged to take a photo of themselves outside in front of the Carousel and either post it to the GRPM's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, using the hashtag #piratesGR. Participants will be entered to win GRPM prize packages.

On October 18, the GRPM will welcome Real Pirates, an exhibition of the story of Whydah, the first authenticated pirate shipwreck that was located in U.S. waters of the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A storm sunk the ship in 1717, and it is still actively being excavated today.
