A bill, which would rename a portion of I-96 in West Michigan for fallen officer Trevor Slot, has been approved by state legislators.

The bill now awaits Governor Snyder's signature.

The stretch of road would be called "Trevor Slot Memorial Highway" and would run from Fruit Ridge Avenue in Walker to 16th Avenue in Ottawa County.

Freep.com reported on Slot's death:

The 41-year-old Slot was killed Oct. 13, 2011, while laying down spike strips to stop a speeding sport utility vehicle on I-96 about 15 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. The suspects crashed after Slot was hit. They were fatally shot by police when they fired at officers.
