The annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index report is out.

Michigan is in the bottom ten of the list which ranks states by their overall well-being.

Alaska tops the list, while West Virginia ranks 50th.

The list was compiled from over 176,000 interviews with U.S. adults across all states in 2014.

The Well-Being Index ranks five separate categories, then combines them for the final score:

  • Purpose: if you like what you do and are motivated
  • Social: considers relationships and love
  • Financial: measures economic stress and security
  • Community: having pride in where you live
  • Physical: overall physical health
Michigan's rankings by category:
  • Purpose: 45th
  • Social: 37th
  • Financial: 38th
  • Community: 39th
  • Physical: 38th

Michigan ranked 42nd overall.

I feel like Michigan should have ranked higher, but the categories considered are so personal and individualized it's hard to predict.
