The Michigan State High School Athletic Association Boys basketball tournament kicks off tonight with the first round of the Districts.

Here are some West Michigan schools to keep your eye on.

In Class A, the district at Grandville High promises fireworks, as Zeeland East, Holland West Ottawa and Hudsonville all bring quality teams into the fray. West Ottawa, champions of the OK Red, is the odds on favorite, but Zeeland East played in the tougher OK Black Division, so they're ready for battle.

Lowell looks to get out of the Northview district, with Forest Hills Northern the only team who may give them a run for their money. Muskegon also is the odds on favorite to walk away with the Kenowa Hills district. The Big Reds are hoping for a long tournament run.

Over at Grand Rapids Christian, the host Eagles, buoyed in the second half of the season by transfer Xavier Tillman, look to get out of their district intact, but may face challenges from Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills and East Kentwood.

In Class B, it's a weak field at Forest Hills Eastern, where the host Hawks should prevail. Over at Muskegon Orchard View, it's brewing up to be a great finale if favorites Spring Lake and Whitehall, both 16-4 on the season, can get to the finals. Spring Lake's Keegan George is one of the top players to watch in this year's tourney.

At South Christian, the reason why the Michigan tournment is so interesting will play itself out when defending state champion and OK Silver titlist Godwin Heights tips off against OK Gold champ Wayland Union tonight. The two schools are both 17-3, but the state tournament doesn't seed according to regular season record, so Godwin Heights will have to earn its keep early to defend its title. Host school South Christian will also be tough with a home court adavntage should the Wolverines get past the Wildcats.

Allendale, the OK Blue champs, are the best bet to take the Zeeland West district. The Falcons have a tough opening draw with Unity Christian, who battled them to a 45-42 finish earlier this season.

In Class C, Calvin Christian and Covenant Christian are paired against each other in a district semi-final at Saugatuck, where the host school and the always tough NorthPointe Christian are also lurking.

In Class D, Tri-Unity Christian should have an easy time in the Holland Calvary district, while Muskegon Catholic Central hosts a district of teams who all have losing records, making them the default favorite.
