The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival was nominated as one of the top flower festivals in the country earlier this year. Once all the votes were counted, the lilac festival finished second behind Holland's Tulip Time.

The 2016 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival ran from June 3 - 12. It was a few days after the close of the festival when I had a chance to walk through, but you'll see that many lilacs were still in full bloom.

The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival started in 1948. It was a one-day event meant to highlight the lilacs that were brought to Mackinac during the 1700-1800s. Today, the festival lasts over one week and features one of the longest running horse hitch parades in the world.
