A Wyoming animal hospital sent out a warning to dog owners Friday after discovering an outbreak of a potentially deadly virus.

Veterinarians at the Wyoming Animal Hospital said they have seen cases of the Parvovirus in neighborhoods around the Burton, Chicago Drive, Burlingame and Clyde Park areas of Kent County. They saw 15 cases of Parvo in the month of June alone.

In response to the outbreak, The Spay Neuter Express and Saving Argo Dog Rescue will be giving low cost vaccinations against Parvo from 7-9pm at the Pet Supplies Plus in Wyoming at 2033 28th St, SW. Tomorrow, Thursday the 25th. Vaccinations will be $10 and we can also do heart worm testing for just $15.

According to experts, the Parvovirus can spread easily from dog to dog. Once the virus is in an area, a dog can pick it up from the ground or even from humans carrying it on shoes or clothing. Puppies and unvaccinated dogs are the most susceptible to the virus.

The virus causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and possibly death.

The Parvovirus did not impact dogs until the 80's when the virus evolved from an infection in other animals.

Veterinarians believe the best defense against the virus is vaccination.
