Changes are coming to the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island.

Summer trips to Mackinac Island are a longtime tradition, not only for those of us in Michigan, but for people across the country and across the world.

Winter trips aren't as much fun for most.

The Grand Hotel has been taking advantage of the seasonal downtime and is completely renovating its 660-foot front porch. The Grand Hotel tells us the project has taken place over the last two winters and is set to be complete by May 4, just in time for opening weekend.

Last winter, the west end of the porch underwent renovations. This winter, work has moved to the east side. Among the changes you'll see is the floor. The 50-year-old floor was taken down to the original from 1887 before putting in a brand new floor.

Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel is also building three new Cupola Suites. They will also be ready by opening weekend.

The three new Cupola Suites are being constructed on the hotel's fourth floor and include the addition of five dormers. It will give the hotel a look similar to what was seen when it first opened in 1887.
