Grand Rapids Humane Society ArtPrize Monkey Exhibit Finally Revealed

Sculptor and ArtPrize artist Dale Rogers, along with Humane Society of West Michigan have confirmed the location of the Metal Monkey Mania ArtPrize exhibit to hang from the top of the Blue Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Grand Rapids. This exhibit will be experienced from the bridge as spectators will be able to stand underneath 100 metal monkeys hanging overhead.

Each monkey is 4 1/2 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 6 inches deep and each weighs about 30 pounds.  They are made of steel and are designed to oxidize into a rich brown color. As you can see from the mock up of the bridge, the monkeys will hang in groupings of two or three.  A grouping of two will be about 9 feet long and three will be 13 1/2 feet long.

Safety is always the number one consideration for Rogers when planning his artwork and these monkeys were designed and planned to be as safe and secure as humanly possible.  The hands of the monkeys have a bolt system so they will be clamped together in their groupings and around the bridge girders; they cannot be lifted off.   The monkeys will sway a bit in the wind but not excessively.

Last week, Massachusetts-based award-winning sculptor, Dale Rogers announced that he has once again partnered with Humane Society of West Michigan to showcase his 2011 ArtPrize exhibit ‘Metal Monkey Mania’ – 100 metal monkeys that interlock and hang similar to a barrel of monkeys. A location had not been confirmed at the press conference held at the J.W. Marriott as of Tuesday last week.
