Grandwich 2014 Contest Announces Top 10

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI) and Neighborhood Ventures announced the top 10 finalists who will compete to win the title of Grandwich 2014.

On July 8, over 30 restaurants entered their sandwich creations into a competition to determine the best Grand Rapids sandwich of 2014. For almost three weeks, the public was encouraged to visit participating restaurants in Grand Rapids, try the sandwiches entries, and vote for their favorites, and the public vote determined the top 10 sandwiches.

• San Chez
• Skywalk Deli
• Stella’s Lounge
• Sweet Mellisa’s

The winner of the Grandwich title will be determined this Friday, August 1 at Rosa Parks Circle. From 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., guests will be encouraged to stop by the park and try samples of all 10 sandwiches after making a $5 donation to Kids’ Food Basket, a local nonprofit attacking childhood hunger to ensure that lunch is not the last meal of the day for over 6,000 kids at 32 schools in Grand Rapids and Muskegon.

At the event, three local celebrity judges will taste the 10 sandwiches and award the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at 1 p.m. The judges include local chef business owner, Torrence O’Haire, entertainment reporter, John Gonzalez, and the founder of Kids’ Food Basket, Mary K. Hoodhood. All who attend will have an opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice winner. For the rest of us, there will be music and activities for kids such as face painting and the opportunity to decorate lunch bags for Kids’ Food Basket.
