Grand Rapids Public Schools are closed Friday. School Officials said the sidewalks and streets are not clear enough for the children to safely go to school.  GRPS leaders Thursday called on members of the community to shovel the walks, bus stop corners and just about anything snow covered so the kids could return to the classroom.

District spokesman John Helmholdt said the district is again asking  for all parents, students, and good Samaritans to help clear the snow throughout the weekend to ensure a safe path for students to get to and from school on Monday.

"The safety and security of our community's children must be a top priority," said Larry Johnson, Grand Rapids’ executive director of public safety earlier on Thursday.

"As a community, we all have a responsibility to ensure that students are getting safely to and from school. We need to make sure that students are not forced into a situation where they need to choose between walking in the street versus a snow covered sidewalk."
