The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating an assault against a cab driver that they believe could be a case of ethnic intimidation.

According to a release, a 30-year old man of East African descent was driving a cab on the night of Saturday, November 12, 2016. He picked up 5 women at The B.O.B, in downtown Grand Rapids, just before 2:30 a.m. When he picked up the women, a man also got into the vehicle.

The driver dropped the women off at their destination, and then the suspect asked to be dropped off at a different location. When the driver informed the suspect that it would cost him more money, police say the man assaulted the driver several times while yelling the word “Trump."

Officers located the man and arrested him for assault and battery. Following his arrest, police say he made discriminatory remarks about the victim.

The Grand Rapids Police would like the 5 women who were in the cab to call police at 616-456-3829.
