On Tuesday, the Grand Rapids City Commission approved a new ordinance that is designed to keep bike lanes clear and open for use.

The city has received complaints that people are parking their cars in the lanes making them unusable for bicyclists.

This new ordinance prohibits parking in a bike lane, and anyone who does park in them could receive a ticket. It's unclear at this time how much those tickets will be.

The ordinance will take effect September 23, but police won't start enforcing it for at least 45 days or longer, depending how long it takes for drivers to adapt.
