Earlier this year, we told you about Grand Rapids' bid to host the State Games Of America in 2017.  The West Michigan Sports Commission, Experience Grand Rapids, and the Meijer State Games of Michigan submitted a bid to host the State Games of America in 2017.

This week, Grand Rapids takes another step toward hosting the games.  The National Congress Of State Games will be visiting West Michigan today, tomorrow and Wednesday to look at venues, hotels and to speak with planning personnel.

Other cities vying to host the games include San Diego; Lincoln, Nebraska and Hampton Roads, Virginia.

After the National Congress Of State Games visits all the cities, some will be asked to give a final presentation during a convention in October.

The State Games would bring an estimated 5,000 out-of-state athletes to West Michigan, plus 8,000 in-state athletes.

From their website:

The State Games of America (SGA) is a biannual Olympic-style event featuring competition between State Games medal winners (gold, silver, bronze) from across the nation.  Under the SGA format, all residents of the host state are eligible to participate along with State Games participants from all other states who’ve earned a medal in the two years leading up to the State Games of America.

Let's show the NCSG what we've got!  Go Grand Rapids!
