The Grand Haven Department of Public safety is looking for the parents of a newborn baby that was dropped off at North Ottawa Community Hospital around 6:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

The baby was dropped off by a friend of the mother, presumably under Michigan’s Safe Delivery of Newborns law. The law allows an infant’s biological parent to bring their child to an Emergency Service Provider and relinquish authority of the infant.

Because the infant was brought to the hospital by someone other than its biological parent, police are trying to reach out to the biological parents to confirm that the decision to relinquish authority of the infant was voluntary. They emphasize that their attempts to communicate with the parents will remain confidential if applicable under the Safe Delivery of Newborns Law.

Law enforcement’s duties in these types of circumstances are to determine that the child has not been abducted, abandoned, or involved in other criminal activities.

Anyone wishing to provide information which could further assist this matter is asked to contact the Detective Bureau at Grand Haven Department of Public Safety (616-842-3460), the Ottawa County Silent Observer Program at 1-877-88-SILENT (745368), or via the web at www.mosotips.com.
