‘Frozen’ Is Highest Grossing Animated Film of All Time
In what had become an inevitability at this point with the insanely rising box office numbers, Disney’s smash hit animated film ‘Frozen‘ has now become the highest grossing animated film of all time, usurping former crown holder ‘Toy Story 3,’ which held the title since 2010. And judging by these numbers and the love for the film, it doesn’t look like ‘Frozen’ is going to “Let It Go” so easily.
Over the weekend, ‘Frozen’ officially became the highest grossing animated film of all time, raking in a total of $1.0724 billion worldwide. That’s not a number to scoff at. In addition, it’s also entered the list of the top 10 biggest films of all time, earning $398.4 million in the U.S. and $674 million internationally.
Formerly, Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ held the title for highest grossing animated film of all time, surpassed by Pixar’s ‘Finding Nemo’ in 2003, ‘Shrek 2′ in 2004, and ‘Toy Story 3′ in 2010. Aside from ‘Shrek 2,’ Disney and Pixar have continued to claim this title repeatedly, but you’re not really surprised, are you?
‘Frozen’ recently snagged an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and thanks to a holiday boost and a sing-along theatrical re-release, the money kept rolling in. It also doesn’t hurt that the film is just — quite frankly — amazing, with its tale of sisterly love and subversive take on the classic Disney princess formula.
It’s going to take a whole, whole lot of something special for another animated film to snatch this crown from Queen Elsa now.
