Fred Meijer was well-known for years of leading Meijer grocery stores.  He was also greatly respected for his work as a philanthropist in West Michigan.

Meijer died Friday night following a stroke.

Meijer representatives issued the following statement:

Fred Meijer passed away Friday evening, November 25, 2011 at the Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, MI after suffering a stroke in his home in the early morning hours. More information on arrangements will be forthcoming. In the meantime, the Meijer family thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers, and requests their privacy be respected at this difficult time.

We now have some information on memorial services.  WZZM reports:

A public visitation will take place at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Scuplture Park Tuesday, November 29th from 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

A private memorial service will unfold the following day.
