Artist Emily Lynch Victory was one of five finalists at the fourth annual ArtPrize Pitch Night Minneapolis event, held at the Walker Art Center. She won a $5,000 cash grant and a guaranteed spot on the seventh floor at 200 Ottawa in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize Eight.

“Math can be scary, and I try to make it approachable and enjoyable through my artwork,” said Victory. “It’s an amazing experience when you discover that the music and math match, that they speak to each other -- that you’re seeing and hearing the patterns. The salient moment when your senses and intellect align.”

The Minnesota-based artist is fascinated by pattern, symmetry, music and mathematics. A former math teacher, Victory creates systematic rules and uses mathematical concepts as the basis of her installations. To create the multi-sensory installation, Victory identified numeric patterns within the downtown office space’s dimensions and translated them into geometric patterns that will cover the walls -- and then into melodies that will fill the room.

Each artist at Thursday’s Pitch Night Minneapolis event was given five minutes and five slides to sell their site-specific installation idea to a panel of local arts professionals including: Jordan Carter, Curatorial Fellow for Visual Arts at Walker Art Center; Alexa Horochowski, Artist and Professor of Sculpture at St. Cloud State University; Tricia Khutoretsky, Curator and Co-Director of Public Functionary; Roderic Southall, Independent Curator; and Carolina Borja, Artist and winner of Pitch Night Minneapolis in 2015.

“I’m excited about her being at ArtPrize because I think that her concept will successfully appeal to both the public and to the jurors,” noted Borja following the event. “It’s attractive to see a series of paintings and music based on the dimensions of the space. It’s a very well-rounded concept.”

ArtPrize Eight will take place in Grand Rapids from September 21 - October 9, 2016.
