The first major snowfall of the season is making a mess of West Michigan roadways today.

A family of five people -- a father, mother and three children -- were in a vehicle that crashed into the back of a fire truck on westbound I-196 at Market Avenue, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

The driver lost control of the car and hit the truck just after 10 a.m. Saturday.

WZZM-13 reports that authorities still are working to extract the father from the vehicle, and that the remaining victims have been transported to area hospitals.

Westbound I-196 remains closed at this time, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Drivers are being rerouted to Lake Michigan Drive.
