The Cornerstone reads May 30, 1875. It was a marker for the Church of Saint Andrew and was sealed on that date 140 years ago. This Saturday, May 30, 2015, the Church, which has become the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, will commemorate its 140th anniversary. The ceremony will begin with a Mass at 4:30pm, celebrated by Bishop David J. Walkowiak, and a reception afterwards. At 8pm, the Grand Rapids Choir of Men and Boys will present “The House of the Lord,” a celebration of the Cathedral’s anniversary featuring Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. The concert is free and open to the public.

Cathedral rector, Father John Geaney, CSP, notes, “The Cathedral is an amazingly beautiful building that is now the linchpin of Cathedral Square in downtown Grand Rapids. It is a wonderful, even iconic building that reminds people again and again of the importance of such buildings in which we can worship God.”

The Cathedral welcomes more than 1,500 people to Mass each weekend, and countless others to the various concerts, celebrations, and worship services that showcase the diversity of art and religion in and around Grand Rapids.

“Just two weeks ago an Opera was performed in the Cathedral, not long before that the Grand Rapids Symphony performed, and in between each of those great events, we had the Calvin College Chorus present a Sunday afternoon concert.” Geaney said. “Our staff, especially music director Nicholas Palmer, does an excellent job in making sure that we use the Cathedral to everyone’s advantage.” Many of the concerts are free to the public.

The Cathedral of Saint Andrew is located at 215 Sheldon Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, 49503.
