The Ionia Free Fair is this Thursday and will continue through Saturday, July 28th! The Fair has been a tradition here in Michigan since 1857 and has been ranked as one of the Top 50 Fairs in the nation.

Over the years lots of big names have graced the Ionia Free Fair stage. Some of the old timers include Gabby Hayes, Les Paul, Buster Keaton, Sonny and Cher, and world renowned country artists Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw and Willie Nelson.

Grand Rapids Museums FREE 4 ALL Happens Again This Weekend!

It's time for another Grand Rapids FREE 4 All! A few months ago we you about the first Free 4 All that happened in January, and I am happy to tell you that it was a GREAT success! All of Grand Rapids was invited to take advantage of FREE ADMISSION to 4 Grand Rapids museums in the month of January. The tally at the end of the the very first Free 4 All was 14,000 people. The second one was just as successful so here comes number three for the museum Free 4 All!

51st Annual Grand Haven Art Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

We're only a few months away from ArtPrize so look at this as the warm up! The 51st Annual Grand Haven Art Festival is this weekend, June 23rd - 24th. Washington Avenue will be turned into an outdoor art gallery. There will be lots of local talent and it will also feature art from 150 of the nation's leading artists. There will also be a Family Day Of Fun, June 23rd, 10am-2pm, with arts and crafts activities for the kids. Admission and parking are free and open to the public both days.

West Michigan Chalk Art Festival 2012 In Byron Center

When I first heard about the West Michigan Chalk Art Festival, or really any event that involves chalk, what person do you automatically think of? If you were living in Grand Rapids in 2009, Rob Bliss, of course! Remember Chalk Flood? It's the same thing that happens every time I hear American Pie by Don McLean on the radio, on my iPod, wherever; my mind starts streaming images of the American Pie lipdub video (almost 5 million view so far!). It's still as brilliant as it was the first time I watched it. It's poetry in motion. Kind of strange how big events and good music, have a tendency of cementing memories inside the brain.

They like to reminisce when they see some of the old cars they drove around the streets of Grand Rapids when they were young men and women.

I love architecture! Recently I sold a number of paintings that were done by architect Frank Lloyd Wright's last apprentice on eBay, his name was Robert Green. I purchased a number of Robert's paintings from his son Matthew. I think his paintings were so wonderful because there was just something so different about them. Maybe being an architect, that happened to be lucky enough to study under one of the most highly acclaimed architects of all time, may have helped Robert to look at things a bit differently. I imagine that this feature length documentary will examine all of the aspects of building and how it affects our cities, neighborhoods, landscapes and nature itself.

What does Memorial Day Weekend mean to you? Over the years it has become an occasion, for many, as a weekend to remember. Many people visit the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not. Red, white and blue flags wave over the grave stones and flowers sometimes decorate the grave markers. It has also become a long weekend devoted to bargain shopping, family gatherings, barbecues, fireworks, and trips to the beach. (Grand Haven and the Lakeshore is usually PACKED on Memorial Day weekend, if the weather in nice.)

Talked to Josh Depenbrok this morning from grNow and he mentioned the Great Lakes Kite Festival. It took me back to my days in Detroit. I couldn't wait for the springtime when the wind would start kicking up and I would head over to the church parking lot where there weren't too many overhead wires and I would run as fast as I could to get my kite in the air. I would make it dip and soar. I think kids who even spend a lot of time behind a computer screen or in front of the television flying a virtual kite might even enjoy this.

Grand Rapids Fulton Street Farmers' Market Opens Saturday Morning

The new and improved Fulton Street Farmers Market will officially open at 7:45am for the ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday, bright and early!

So whats different? The market will now feature permanent, covered, open air spaces and a plaza with seating, bike parking, and an overflow area for vendors. The goal still is to raise enough funds to make the market a year-round building.
