“Bald Barbie” Inspired By Facebook Campaign !

In Grand Rapids, Salon Nouveau does a number of charity events to help  "Children With Hairloss" (if you'd like to donate your long hair for a good cause).

Think back to when you were  a little girl or a teenager or even an adult.  Females place so much value and importance on their hair, is the color right, how about the style, did the hair stylist give you a good cut?  Truth be told there are lots of children who for one reason or another don't have hair, or they have too little of  it, or have lost it through chemotherapy treatments.

13 Causes Of Depression – Some Might Surprise You

When I was clicking through the list I would have to say probably most of us, living in an urban setting in the year 2012, would be facing most of those things.  I'm sure when you click through the list there may be a few that will make you say to yourself, yup, yup, yup.  Okay, now I get it!  It's depression.

We've all probably heard about the sunshine correlation and how the lack of it contributes to depression, but there are a few more things that have surfaced that might actually surprise you.

School’s Out For Summer Grand Rapids

Will Smith did a song called Summertime, it was that song from the 90's that celebrated being out of school for the summer.  Then there was that old song Alice Cooper sang called, School's Out. And all of the nonsensical songs that kids just make up the words to that celebrate the end of another school year. I remember those days.  I would mark them off on my calendar until vacation was here!

Well, it's just about that time again mom, so Brace Yourself! One week away, and counting down the days until June 8th.  According to the Grand Rapids Public School System calendar that is the official end of the school year.

His name is Chas Burtchett, and I first met him and heard him sing at the Autism Support of Kent County Walkathon a few weeks back at Kuiper College.  I've been hosting the event for the past 5 years or so.  Chas was telling me and some of the others, about his sister who was diagnosed with Autism.

4-Year-Old Girl’s Hairstyle Get’s Her Banned From School Photos

You know, I'm starting to jump on the bandwagon with everybody else here.  I'm starting to think the political correctness and the desire to make all of humanity look, walk, talk, and dress the same way, is getting a little out of control here.  She's a 4-year-old girl!!!

So here's the story

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Here’s What’s Happening Around Town

What does Memorial Day Weekend mean to you?  Over the years it has become an occasion, for many,  as a weekend to remember.  Many people visit the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.   Red, white and blue flags wave over the grave stones and flowers sometimes decorate the grave markers.  It has also become a long weekend devoted to bargain shopping, family gatherings, barbecues, fireworks, and trips to the beach. (Grand Haven and the Lakeshore is usually PACKED on Memorial Day weekend, if the weather in nice.)

National Safe Boating Week

Since the summer vacation and boating season isn't too far off, it's a good time to remember your boating and water safety training.

In fact, it'd be a good idea to make sure your kids are aware of the responsibilities that come along with being on the water.  That's why the "North American Safe Boating Campaign" put together a website designed specially for your kids, called "Sidekicks: Ready, Set, Wear It!"

MEAP Exam Test Constantly Changing For Grand Rapids Kids & Teachers

Yeah, I remember these tests.  The pressure seemed to be just too much.  Even if I knew the information the importance of scoring on this test just made me blank out. If you're raising children in Michigan, you are all too familiar with the MEAP test.

This year, the state has raised the passing standards. Come this fall, and there are some lawmakers who want to get rid of the test all together.

Go Fly A Kite! At The Great Lakes Kite Festival In Grand Haven

Talked to Josh Depenbrok this morning from grNow and he mentioned the Great Lakes Kite Festival.   It took me back to my days in Detroit.  I couldn't wait for the springtime when the wind would start kicking up and I would head over to the church parking lot where there weren't too many overhead wires and I would run as fast as I could to get my kite in the air.  I would make it dip and soar.  I think kids who even spend a lot of time behind a computer screen or in front of the television flying a virtual kite might even enjoy this.
