On Tuesday, a Senate committee approved Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, as chosen by Trump. This means she's one step closer to attaining the position. Her nomination now goes to the full Senate for consideration.

According to the Washington Post, all of the (12) Republicans voted in favor of her while all the (11) Democrats, in Senate, voted against her.

Ever since President Trump announced DeVos as his pick for Secretary of Education, there has been widespread backlash and controversy. People, mostly parents, are concerned with DeVos' lack of experience in public education.

DeVos, has been a proponent of private education, and has never attended, worked or sent her kids to public schools. Opponents believe her interests and views will negatively affect students who attend public school, which the majority of U.S. students are enrolled in.

DeVos made headlines when she had her confirmation hearing a couple weeks ago as she stumbled through her answers. Most notably, she became a topic of conversation (and laughter) for saying she would support guns in schools because of "grizzlies."

There is no word yet on when the entire Senate will vote on her confirmation.
