It’s true that opposites can attract but will the love last? In Neil Simon’s romantic comedy, Barefoot in the Park, we find out, as Grand Rapids Civic Theatre opens their next production January 15, running through January 31.

One of the funniest plays/movies of all time, Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He is a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she is a free spirit always searching for the newest trend. After a 6 day honeymoon, the couple returns to life in their overpriced and under-performing New York brownstone and a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother. From there, everything that can go wrong does. Paul doesn’t understand how Corie embraces life as a series of exciting quests. Corie, noticing how uptight Paul is becoming wants him to be more spontaneous, running Barefoot in the Park would be a great start.

Neil Simon, an American playwright and screenwriter, has left his comedic footprint in the world of arts and culture. One of his shining stars is found in the second play of his career; Barefoot in the Park, which received a 1964 Tony Best Play nomination. Later, Simon adapted the play for screen allowing Robert Redford to reprise his stage role as Paul and bringing Jane Fonda to the role of Corie.
