Andy Rent

Starting out as a weatherman/TV-Radio host for TV8 in the 70's, I also played "Captain Woody" on the TV8 afternoon kids show, might be the most recognized personality in the West Michigan area having been on radio and TV for the better part of three decades. I'm originally a "Hoosier" from Muncie, Indiana and always wanted to be in “show biz”. After graduating from Ball State University, I stayed in Indiana, working in radio and TV in Richmond, Muncie and Indianapolis. I moved to Grand Rapids to work at WOOD-TV where I met my wife Kathy. I'm deeply involved in the Grand Rapids and West Michigan community. I've served on the board of directors of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the Metropolitan YMCA, and Easter Seals-Michigan. I also assist the Salvation Army, DeGage Ministries, JDRF, Disability Advocates, Hope Network, and various other non-profit organizations. Interests: I love golf, travel, reading, dining out, theater and movies. And, of course my children and grandchildren. My wife Kathy and I have 7 children and 13 grandchildren. We have a busy life. Music: I love all kinds - especially jazz, blues, and classical, rock and pop hits. The best part about my job: The ability to make a difference in the community.

Remembering the Hip Fashion Trends of the 70’s

Ahhh, the 70's. The times of bell bottoms, hippie chic, attitude.

Bright colors, bright patterns, and, it wasn't always pretty. Remember? It was all about freedom and color with bright patterns all over everything. Not all of it was pretty, but we didn't care, because we were "in!"

We were the children.....okay.....young adults, of the fun 70's. But now, the children and young adults of those times are in their 40's, 50's and 60's, so I thought it would be fun to relive our "good old days," and look back at our fashion statements.

Hunger is a big problem for many children, too many. Not enough food can mean concentration problems, anger and health issues, doing poorly in school. During any school year there are State and National programs that provide breakfast and lunch for those children that otherwise might do without. And, at the end of the day, Kids' Food Basket provides a sack supper for the student to take home so that they will have a healthy meal that evening.

But, wait, it's summer. School is out, so what happens to these vulnerable kids?

Do You Remember the Kentwood Station Restaurant?

Just thinking back to some more good, local, restaurants that have closed, and the Kentwood Station popped into my head. It was like stepping back in time when you walked into the old train station like restaurant, with sound effects and all, as I remember.
