Blood, human ashes, lipstick, and more.

Artists used a wide variety of mediums to express themselves at ArtPrize 2014.

Sometimes the medium or process of creating a piece of art is the message. That is the case for many at ArtPrize this year.

David Dodde's "Self Portrait" is serigraph monoprint of his father, Ryan Dodde, who passed away in December 2013. The print consists of two layers. The first is silver, which was Ryan Dodde's favorite precious metal. The second layer uses Dodde's ashes. The canvas is made of wood, to honor Dodde's career in the furniture industry.

"Self Portrait" is at Women's City Club.

Christopher Kovacevich used lipstick and impressions of his own lips on 6144 squares to make the portrait "Me, In Lipstick" at Women's City Club.

The entry is inspired by a lipstick mark left on a jacket 24 years ago.
