ArtCapsule of Rockford…Is It Art Prize?

WZZM

If the Rockford ArtCapsule competition sounds like a smaller version of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, that’s the idea.

“Yes, they try to run it like ArtPrize,” says stained glass artist Michele Jennings.

“The Rockford Area Arts Commission wanted to do something along the lines of what Grand Rapids does for Rockford artists,” explains ArtCapsule organizer Jeannie Gregory to WZZM.  “We wanted to feature as much artwork as we could in as many venues as we could.”

Artists are hanging some of their best work at locations all over Rockford.

The five pieces that get the most votes from the public win cash prizes.

“It’s wonderful having my work shown and see other people appreciate it,” says photographer Paul Willis, who has a piece on display in Herman’s Boy Coffee Ranch.

“You have to have a piece that’s outstanding,” adds Jennings. “Presentation is important.”

There are 30 artists showing work in 22 Rockford venues.

Voting for ArtCapsule is by paper ballot Saturday.

Restaurants will also offer inexpensive menu samples inviting people to have a “Taste of Rockford.”

“I’m excited we are doing it,” says Floyd Havemeier of Herman’s Boy Coffee Ranch. “It was good last year and I’m sure it’s going to be even better this year.”

Some of the ArtCapsule competitors will also enter pieces in the Grand Rapids ArtPrize next month.

“I do have that competitive edge in me,” admits Jennings.
