Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas became suspicious after reading reports of the alleged lawsuit and looking at pictures of the document. The envelope that the lawsuit allegedly came in was postmarked in Philadelphia, and the envelope was not the same type that is used in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Matyas' office did a handwriting comparison between the note and Dalton's writing, and the two did not match.

He also said he spoke with Dalton on the morning of March 17, and Dalton had no knowledge of a lawsuit. Dalton also claimed he had not authorized anyone to file a lawsuit on his behalf.

There are no criminal charges involved with the phony lawsuit, but the information was forwarded on to the FBI because the paperwork was sent to a federal court.

Dalton has claimed that the Uber app directed him to shoot eight people on the evening of February 20 at several different locations around Kalamazoo. Six people were killed and two more were injured.
