Consumers Energy's first solar power plant has opened. The plant is located on Grand Valley State University property.

Take a unique look at the solar power plant with aerial and time-lapse views.

The plant covers a total of 17 acres and includes 11,000 Michigan-made solar panels. The 3-megawatt plant creates enough electricity to power 600 homes. It is the largest solar facility in Michigan.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 10 to celebrate the new power plant.

A second Consumers Energy solar power plant is expected to open at Western Michigan University this summer. A third location, which would be in mid-Michigan, is also being considered.

The new GVSU power plant helps Consumers Energy meet certain restrictions. Michigan law says 10 percent of the electricity they provide must come from renewable sources.

Consumers Energy is the largest utility company in Michigan. They provide natural gas and electricity to 6.7 million of the state’s 10 million residents in the Lower Peninsula.
