A semi crash Tuesday in Grand Rapids has caused the closing of Grandville Avenue underneath the US-131 bridge that crosses the road.

According to WOOD TV, a semi truck crashed on US-131 heading down the southbound side just before Wealthy Street in downtown Grand Rapids.

The crash has caused major traffic backups on US-131 as well as Grandville Avenue in the area near the overpass where the freeway crosses the street.

Bridge crews have been called in to inspect the damage the semi has caused the overpass. When the semi crashed, it jackknifed, taking out a huge chunk of the bridge.

One lane on Southbound US-131 is still blocked where the semi has taken out the piece of the bridge. Authorities have removed the semi from the area but the bridge still needs to be inspected before the lane re-opens.

There is no word on the cause of the crash or if anyone suffered any injuries.

Our friend Chad Verwey from The Intersection snapped this photo Tuesday morning of the truck and also the debris that fell from the overpass onto Grandville Ave.

Verwey also sent us some update photos after the semi had been removed. That's going to be a fun clean up project...
