Police were investigating a dispute between a landlord and a tenant in Athens County when they noticed evidence of cockfighting. 

WZZM-13 reports that Calhoun County police were called to the 3000 block of 31/2 Mile Road in Athens Township around noon on Friday.

Upon arrival, police found evidence of cockfighting. They obtained and executed a search warrant for the property.

With assistance from animal control, authorities seized 21 rooster and four hens, along with other evidence. The birds are now at the Calhoun County Animal Shelter in Battle Creek

A 46-year-old man who was not at home at the time of the search is the focus of the investigation, which police say is ongoing.
